Comprender el coeficiente de flujo (CV) en Válvulas de Control de Agua

Jul 10, 2026 | Noticias

Un contratista de protección contra incendios en Singapur nos llamó el mes pasado.. He had installed a bank of válvula de compuerta on a new high-rise sprinkler riser. El sistema pasó la prueba de presión.. Pero cuando realizaron la prueba de flujo, La presión del agua en el último piso bajó demasiado.. The valves were the right size. The pipes were the right size. But the valves could not pass enough water.

He chose the wrong Cv.

That is a mistake we see often. Engineers and contractors focus on pipe size and pressure rating. They forget about flow capacity. Then the system fails the performance test and they have to rip out valves and start over.

EnGrupo de tecnología de fluidos, we supply gate valves, válvulas de mariposa, Válvulas de control, and forged steel valves to fire protection and water projects worldwide.

 This article explains what Cv means, why it matters, and how to choose the right valve for your flow requirements.

What Is Cv and Why Does It Matter?

Cv stands for flow coefficient. It is a number that tells you how much water a valve can pass.

Here is the official definition: Cv is the number of US gallons per minute of water at 60°F that flows through a fully open valve with a pressure drop of 1 psi.

Piénsalo de esta manera. A valve with a Cv of 100 will pass 100 gallons per minute when the pressure drops by 1 psi across the valve. A valve with a Cv of 500 will pass five times as much water under the same pressure drop.

Why does this matter for your project? Because water must flow through valves to reach sprinkler heads, hydrants, or equipment. If a valve restricts flow too much, you lose pressure. Sprinklers do not activate properly. Fire pumps work harder. The whole system underperforms.

The single most important piece of information needed to select a control valve is the valve sizing coefficient, CV.

Here is the basic formula:

Cv = Q × √(SG / ΔP)

Where:

Q = flow rate in gallons per minute

SG = specific gravity of the fluid (water = 1.0)

ΔP = pressure drop across the valve in psi

For water systems, the formula simplifies. You just need to know your required flow rate and the acceptable pressure drop.

Cv Values by Valve Type – A Practical Comparison

Not all valves have the same flow capacity. Different valve designs create different amounts of flow restriction.

Here is a comparison table for common valve types at full open position. These are approximate values for a 4-inch valve.

Tipo de válvulaApproximate Cv (4″ tamaño, full open)Flow Characteristic
Válvula de compuerta2,500Directo, minimal restriction
Válvula de mariposa (90° open)2,200Moderate restriction, good capacity
Globe valve340High restriction, poor flow capacity
Válvula de bola (full bore)AltoDirecto, excellent capacity

A gate valve achieves on/off through vertical movement of the gate. Cuando está completamente abierto, the flow path is straight and unobstructed, resulting in an extremely low flow resistance coefficient.

A butterfly valve uses a rotating disc to control flow. At 90° open, the disc is parallel to the flow, but the disc itself still creates some restriction.

A globe valve forces water to change direction multiple times inside the body. That creates high flow resistance. The Cv of a globe valve is much lower than a gate or butterfly valve of the same size.

What this means for you:

If you need maximum flow with minimal pressure drop, choose gate valves or full-bore ball valves.

If you need reasonable flow but want a lighter, more compact valve, choose butterfly valves.

If you need precise throttling control, choose globe valves—but plan for higher pressure loss.

How to Size a Valve Using Cv

Here is a practical example.

You need a valve that passes 200 gallons per minute of water with a pressure drop of 4 psi.

Paso 1: Use the formula Cv = Q × √(SG / ΔP)

Q = 200 GPM

SG = 1.0 (agua)

ΔP = 4 psi

Paso 2: Calculate Cv = 200 × √(1.0 / 4) = 200 × 0.5 = 100

You need a valve with a rated Cv of at least 100 at full open.

Best practice: Size the valve to operate at 60–80% open at normal flow. This leaves margin for flow increases and gives you better control. Select a valve with a rated Cv that falls between 20% y 80% open stem travel.

Also increase your required Cv by 10–15% to account for different operating conditions, pipe friction losses, and future system changes.

The Market Is Growing – And Proper Valve Sizing Matters More Than Ever

Let me share some numbers that show why this industry has a strong future.

The global industrial valves market was valued at approximatelyDólar estadounidense 101.94 billion in 2025 and is projected to reachDólar estadounidense 147.19 mil millones por 2032, growing at aCAGR of 5.2%Other estimates put the 2025 market atDólar estadounidense 91.93 mil millones, projected to grow byDólar estadounidense 133.53 billion at a CAGR of 5.47% por 2032.

The fire protection valve and fitting market is expected to grow fromDólar estadounidense 1.97 billion in 2025 to USD 3.5 mil millones por 2035, at aCAGR of 5.9%The fire control valve market alone was estimated atDólar estadounidense 2.03 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at aCAGR of 5.50%.

What drives this growth?

Urbanización – More cities, more buildings, more fire protection systems.
Stricter regulations – Fire codes get updated. Older systems need upgrades.
Infrastructure replacement – Aging water networks and industrial plants need new valves.
Industrial expansion – Oil, gas, químico, and power sectors all need reliable valves.

For you as a buyer, this means steady demand. But it also means you need to specify valves correctly. A valve with the wrong Cv causes flow problems. Flow problems delay projects. Delayed projects cost money.

What Fluid Tech Group Supplies

EnGrupo de tecnología de fluidos, we manufacture and supply valves for water and fire protection systems worldwide. Our range includes:

válvulas de compuerta – OS&Y and NRS types, with high Cv for minimal flow restriction

Válvulas de mariposa – wafer and lug types, with good flow capacity in a compact design

Revisar válvulas – swing, oblea, and spring-loaded types

Forged steel valves – to ASME B16.11, ASTM A105, Para aplicaciones de alta presión

Válvula de bolas – full bore for maximum flow

We provide Cv data for every valve we sell. You get the numbers you need to size your system correctly. We also provide material test reports, dimensional inspection records, and certification documents with every shipment.

Your Next Step

Do not guess on valve sizing. A valve that is too small restricts flow. A valve that is too large costs more and may not control properly.

Send us your valve requirements. Tell us your flow rate, pressure drop, y aplicación. We will recommend the right valve type and size with the correct Cv for your project.
