What you need to check before choosing a valve for a large water project

Most people think a valve is just a valve. Open, close, done. But in a real large-scale water infrastructure project — especially here in the Middle East — that thinking will get you into trouble fast.

You are dealing with:

  • high pressures in long transmission lines
  • seawater in desalination plants
  • sand and debris from underground sources
  • extreme summer heat
  • pumps running almost non-stop

Materials – do not guess on this one.

For drinking water systems, you need materials that are safe and will not rust from the inside out. Look for NSF 61 certification. That is the standard AWWA uses for water distribution valves. No certification? Do not use it.

For seawater or high-salinity environments, standard stainless steel 304 will not hold up. Go to 316 stainless steel. Even better: duplex stainless steel. It costs more upfront but lasts much longer when salt is constantly hitting the metal.

Sealing design matters more than you think.

If you are still using old-style wedge gate valves for water and wastewater, you should take a hard look at resilient seated gate valves instead. Why? They seal better. They need less force to turn. And they do not trap dirt and debris at the bottom like wedge valves do. The rubber coating also soaks up pressure spikes, so you get less water hammer damage over time.

Certifications are not optional for fire protection.

If the valve goes into a fire protection system, you need UL listing or FM approval. That is it. These valves sit there for years, maybe a decade, without moving. But when a fire happens, they have to work immediately at high temperatures and high pressures. No room for “good enough.”

Lifecycle cost is what you should really care about.

A cheap valve that rusts out in five years is not cheap. You pay for replacement, for downtime, for labor, for rework. Quality valves run for twenty years or more. The challenge is that coatings on valves often get damaged near the sealing surfaces just from normal operation. So many engineers now pick designs that simply reduce or remove exposed metal surfaces altogether.
